During the first Spanish-Portuguese Meeting on Ecological Conservation and Production, held in Huelva representatives of the sector of organic production in Portugal and Spain have set common strategies to improve information, consumer awareness and to enhance the security of organic products.
Businessmen from both Countries agreed on the need to ensure product quality according to European Regulation EC 834/2007.
According to the newspaper Huelvainformacion.es, one of the problems encountered as a result of the existence of multiple regulatory agencies, is that there are too many certification labels, something that according to the industry, scatters doubt and mistrust in the consumer. Facing this problem, many discussion groups proposed to create "universal labels".
During the meeting, discussion groups also addressed the role of information campaigns for organic products. In this way, marketing plays a minor role, because once consumers know the benefits of those kind of products, marketing becomes unnecessary. However, according to experts, the society still does not associate the term "organic" with "beneficial effects".
The Secretary of State for Agriculture and Fisheries of Portugal, Luis Madeiro, showed its readiness to continue close relations with Spain in the field of organic production. Madeiro said that organic production is very important for Portugal and that in the current crisis, transboundary policies are needed to move forward and improve.
